The experience of defence families is unique. There are challenges that families experience that are unexplainable to the uninitiated. Whether it’s life in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, it can be a difficult life for families.
As part of a military family, I experienced this first hand, and I know how tough it can be from the perspective of a child (ten schools in total).
Although things have changed since I was a young un (apparently that fun fire foam we played in is toxic), there is no doubt that defence families face tremendous pressures that can cause family breakdown.
Sadly, the issues and pressures that arise come from the sacrifice families make in order to serve, and include:
- The sacrifice of the career of one partner;
- Relocation and the impact on the family unit;
- Exercises which require one parent to assume the primary care of children during their partners absence (and the toll this takes on both parents);
- Deployment overseas and adjusting back to family life upon return;
- Impacts on physical and mental heath as a result of service; and
- Lack of extended family support due to postings.
I have found in working with military families, this first hand understanding is of great assistance in achieving a great outcome for clients. We can assist in negotiating parenting orders which accomodate for postings. We are familiar with DFRDB, MSBS, Military Super, and the numerous allowances and tax concessions available to ADF members.
Most importantly, we understand and we care. As simple as that. We can help you wherever you are in Australia, so please get in touch.
